I have taught communication courses and given many talks and workshops to various groups about communication skills at both the high school and college level for almost 25 years. In addition to public address and rhetoric, I am also interested in the research and art of oral interpretation, reader’s theatre, and mass communication. I enjoy learning about communication theory and applying the theory to the ongoing work of enhancing my communication skills, as well as helping others to become more effective communicators.

I believe that communication is a powerful and empowering skill to develop. I also believe that every student can improve his/her ability to communicate effectively and that being an effective communicator enhances credibility and helps the individual to feel more competent and confident in any field of endeavor.

The study of public speaking and rhetoric has a natural connection to many other areas of study such as composition, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. The study and practice of communication is an excellent major field of study; and as a minor concentration, the art and science of communication will enhance any major field of study. Employers across most career fields list communication skills as one of the top skills needed for success. Earning a degree in communication prepares students for many careers, especially those that require working with people.
