CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Giertz Gallery at Parkland College presents the 2023 Art and Design Faculty Exhibition from Aug. 21 through Sept. 30.
The annual showcase features the work of Parkland's faculty artists, which consists of painting, drawing, ceramics, design, metalsmithing, photography, and video. Exhibiting faculty members include Nyx Eckmayer, Shawn Fairchild, Paula McCarty, Melinda McIntosh, Denise Seif, Peg Shaw, Joan Stolz, Matthew Watt, and Kelly White.
An artist reception will be held Thursday, Aug. 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Opening remarks by Nancy Sutton, vice president for academic services, and a gallery talk with faculty member Joan Stolz will begin at 6:15 p.m. José Gobbo will provide music.
Stolz will discuss her paintings including Raptor and Stegosaurus in Sidney.* "Like so many of us, I'm worried about the health of the planet," Stolz explains. "This summer, with unusual heat, flooding, and fires with smoke-filled skies reaching so much of the U.S., has brought this very much to home. These drawings and paintings are really illustrations of extinction, and I used toy dinosaurs and other toys to stand in for the real creatures who have already disappeared or are endangered. For me, it's an ironic twist on playfulness plus reality."
The 2023 Art and Design Faculty Exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Fall gallery hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday noon to 2 p.m. The gallery will be closed Monday, September 4 for Labor Day.
Please note: Construction is ongoing to the outdoor area north of the gallery. Therefore, we recommend using the B7 parking lot (X2 entrance). Once inside the building, turn left then follow all the upward ramps and signs to the gallery.
