Parkland Motorsports Car Show, May 5, Celebrates 20 Years

Classic, late-model custom cars, trucks, other vehicles on display at free public event

The Motorsport program is gearing up for the 20th Annual Parkland Car Show happening Saturday, May 5 in Parkland College's M parking lots.

Classic and late-model custom cars, trucks, and other vehicles will be on display at this free public event, sponsored by the Parkland Motorsport Club. Car show judging begins at noon. Student-choice and participant-vote awards will be announced beginning at 3 p.m.

Community residents are invited to display their own vehicles at the car show. Advance registration is $10 if received by April 27 and is available at parkland.edu/carshow. Registration after April 27 and on the day of the show is $15. Registration fees benefit the club's activities.

Changes to voting implemented in 2017 will continue this year. Jon Ross, automotive program director and car show organizer, explained the reason for the changes.

"There's a national shortage of trained automotive technicians and auto enthusiasts," Ross said. "We've taken half the awards available and devoted them to vehicle owners age 25 and under. The goal is to promote interest among high school and college-aged folks. We hope to see this next generation out here with their vehicles, sharing their work and passion for the automotive industry."

Parkland is hosting the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge for the second year as part of the annual car show. Area residents are encouraged to come out and watch regional teams of high school students disassemble and rebuild an entire Chevy small block engine to factory specifications. Teams achieving a time of 34 minutes or less qualify for the national championship at SEMA in Las Vegas. The competition will take place in the Parkhill Applied Technology Center throughout the day.
