Parkland College Ensembles to Perform Winter Concerts
Parkland College's Winter Concert Season Opens December 9
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Parkland College's winter concert season opens December 9 with the Parkland Chamber Singers.
"Winter's Melodic Embrace," A Joint Concert by the Chamber Singers and featuring Amasong
Saturday, December 9, 3 p.m.
Harold and Jean Miner Theatre
The Parkland Chamber Singers, directed by Dr. Frank Gallo, will perform "Brightest and Best," an Anglo-American Folk Hymn arranged by Shawn Kirchner (1970-); "Glow" by Eric Whitacre (1970-); "Hodie Christus natus est" by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621); and "S'vivon," a Hebrew song for Hanukkah, arranged by Betty Bertaux (1939-2014).
Amasong, directed by Heidi M. Weatherford, will be performing "Evening Rise," arranged by Meinhard Ansohn; "Kore Chant" by Anna Dembska; "Dream a Little Dream of Me" by Fabian Andre and Wilbur Schwandt, lyrics by Gus Kahn, arranged by Andy Beck; and "Cuncti Simus" by Llibre Vermell, ed. Ricardo Soto.
Parkland Guitar Ensemble Winter Concert

The Parkland Guitar Ensemble, directed by Dr. Young Kim, will perform "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen," 18th Century London Melody, arranged by Mark Hayes, transcribed by Manley Mallard; "Go Tell It on the Mountain" African American spiritual, arranged by Mark Hayes, transcribed by Manley Mallard; Claude Debussy's Arabesque No. 1, arranged by Alan Hirsh; and "Just in Tune" by John Abercrombie.

The Parkland Orchestra, directed by Dr. Rodney Mueller, will perform Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Opus 99, l. Allegro con brio by Antonin Dvořák (1841-1904); Les Patineurs–Valses, Opus 183, The Skater's Waltz by Emile Waldteufel (1837-1915); "T'was The Night Before Christmas" by Bill Holcombe (1924-2010), a setting of the Clement Moore poem for narrator and orchestra narrated by Vincent Trauth; "A Christmas Festival" by Leroy Anderson (1908-1975).
The Parkland Concert Band, directed by Dr. Matthew Dixon, will perform "Christmas March" by Forrest L. Buchtel, "The Sussex Mummers" by Percy Grainger, "March of the Toys" by Victor Herbert from Babes in Toyland, arranged by Otto Langley and Herbert Clark; "White Christmas" by Irving Berlin, arranged by John Moss; and "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson.
The Parkland Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Jonathan Beckett, will perform "Fanfare and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," which includes a traditional brass fanfare that has a seamless segue into the contemporary sounds of a Manheim Steamroller treatment of the classic carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing." Selections will also include a medley of beloved favorite songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music," arranged by Robert Russell Bennett, and a treatment of one of J.S. Bach's all-time favorites "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" arranged by Alfred Reed.
