Parent Lab to Improve Assistance with School Subjects

Area residents can increase their ability to help their kids and grandkids with school subjects through a new initiative from Parkland Adult Education's Project READ program, the Champaign Public Library's Douglass Branch and Champaign Unit 4 Schools.
An information session on the new Parent Lab will be held for interested Unit 4 parents Monday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. at CPL's Douglass Branch.
In the Parent Lab, participants will work with tutors to familiarize themselves with the important skills and content that their kids and grandkids are doing at school. The primary areas are math and reading for all subjects. On the second Mondays of the month, participating parents will visit the Douglass Branch for special sessions using educational technology, research tools, career development tools, and other library resources particularly helpful to families.
The Parent Lab will run from Feb. 4 to May 20 on Monday evenings at the Booker T. Washington School library. A light meal, provided at 5:30 p.m., and childcare will be provided for families at every session.
Project READ will be offering tutor training sessions for the Parent Lab initiative and its other tutoring opportunities on the following days and times:
- Monday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m.
- Saturday, Jan. 26 at 9 a.m.,
- Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m.
