"Beneath a Midwestern Sky: Paintings by Douglas C. Johnson" will be exhibited Monday, June 10 through Wednesday, July 31 at Giertz Gallery at Parkland College.

An artist's reception will be held Thursday, June 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Gallery Lounge, with a gallery talk by Johnson at 6:15 p.m. An additional artist lecture will take place on Wednesday, June 26, at noon in Parkland College Lecture Hall L111.

Douglas C. Johnson is a painter who explores the midwestern landscape with quiet exuberance. His long-term relationship with his surroundings in central Illinois provides the subject matter for his work. Using dramatic lighting, an expressive painterly style, and a nuanced color palette, he creates paintings that reflect a reverence for and an expansive view of the American landscape in Illinois.

Johnson holds bachelor's and master's degrees in printmaking and painting from Illinois State University and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Northern Illinois University. He has exhibited in Chicago at several galleries in the River North district and the Chicago International Art Exhibition, among others. His work is also in many private collections. He is the executive director of the McLean County Arts Center in Bloomington, Illinois.

Giertz Gallery programs, exhibitions, receptions, and lectures are free and open to the public, with a goal to exhibit art that reflects and explores society's cultural interests and concerns. It also serves as a learning laboratory for our students. Exhibitions are an opportunity to bring art and ideas together and present them in an accessible, relevant, and meaningful way. Our exhibitions and programming strive to provide a variety of artistic expression and inspire thoughtful dialogue.

Summer gallery hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The college is closed on July 4 in observance of Independence Day. All events in the gallery are free and open to the public. Parkland College is a Section 504/ADA-compliant institution. For accommodation, call 217/353-2338 or email accessibilityservices@parkland.edu.

We suggest using the B7 parking lot on the south end of campus to find the gallery during our construction period. Enter through Door X2 and turn left. Take the first uphill ramp on your right (east of the library stairs) and then the two ramps directly north of the stairs to the highest point on the first floor to find the gallery.
Giertz Gallery acknowledges support from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
