CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Giertz Gallery at Parkland College presents a dynamic exhibition curated by Julia Galloway and Jill Oberman, which represents a cross-section of contemporary ceramics by artists who use innovative approaches and provide bold and unexpected ways of experiencing the medium.
Julia Galloway is a potter with an active studio practice and a professor of ceramics at the University of Montana, Missoula. She is a recipient of a United States Artist Grant and a Distinguished Scholar at the University of Montana. She is also the 2023 Artist of the Year by the Ceramics Arts Network and Ceramics monthly publication.
Jill Oberman is the Curator and Gallery Coordinator at the Red Lodge Clay Center in Red Lodge, Montana. She has been the Executive Director of the Carbondale Clay Center, the Clay Studio of Missoula, Programs and Administration Director at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, and a resident artist at numerous art institutions, notably the Anderson Ranch, the Archie Bray Foundation, and Arrowmont School for Arts and Crafts.
The exhibit participants comprise of artists and faculty from the United States, including Shae Bishop, Bakersville, North Carolina; Brandi Lee Cooper, Edinburg, Texas; Raheleh Filsoofi, Nashville, Tennessee; Del Harrow, Fort Collins, Colorado; Donté Hayes, Cliffwood, New Jersey; Mike Helke, Stillwater, Minnesota; Sydnie Jimenez, Chicago, Illinois; Lauren Mabry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Alleghany Meadows, Carbondale, Colorado; Brad Miller, Venice, California; Bobby Silverman, Long Island City, New York; and Alex Zablocki, Alma, Michigan.
The reception will be on Thursday, November 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with a gallery talk by Galloway and Oberman at 6:15 p.m. and music by Cobra Lounge Trio. A demonstration and walk-thru by Galloway and Oberman will take place on Friday, December 1, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, beginning in Ceramics Studio C193, followed by a gallery walk-thru of the Ceramics Biennial exhibition. The demonstration will include techniques and presentations on surface design and form.
Giertz Gallery hours are Monday–Wednesday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.; and Saturday, noon–2 p.m. The gallery will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, through Sunday, November 26, for Thanksgiving break. The gallery will also be closed Monday, December 11 through January 6 for winter break and Monday, January 15 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Please note: Construction is ongoing to the outdoor area north of the gallery. Therefore, we recommend using the B7 parking lot (X2 entrance). Once inside the building, turn left, then follow all the upward ramps and signs to the gallery.
