Represented by Philip Slein Gallery in Saint Louis, Art Chantry is often associated with the promotional materials he has designed for bands from the Seattle, Washington area. His exhibit at Parkland includes 50 original posters. Chantry’s work reveals a subversive side of graphic design that has been embraced by the advertising industry and continues to influence and define an alternative to high design. Like the do-it-yourself movement, his artistry pays tribute to the idea that you don’t need expensive advertising and equipment to make your message heard. He combines low-tech processes, including collage and appropriation of early-era advertising imagery, to produce a work that smarts of sarcasm and compelling subject matter.
