Apprenticeship Employer fAQ

Apprenticeships, or Work-Based Learning opportunities, can be a great way to build a skilled workforce for your business, but you may have some questions before getting started. See the information below to see how apprenticeships may be a good fit for your industry, or reach out to apprenticeship@parkland.edu to learn more.

How much time does it take to manage an apprenticeship program?
As a registered group sponsor, Parkland will manage the USDOL and student services components of your program at no cost. The direct supervisor and or mentor will need to spend some extra time providing training and direction to the apprentice as they learn the ropes.

How does an apprenticeship increase employee retention?

Investing in an employee's training and providing them a path forward with increasing wages builds considerable loyalty. USDOL reports that 90% of apprentices retain employment upon completion of their program.

What is the employer required to provide an apprentice?
An employer must provide their registered apprentice with a paid job, periodic wage increases as a reward for skills gains, and an experienced mentor to support the apprentice's orientation to the company and on-the-job learning throughout the apprenticeship.
Do we provide the apprentices, or do you connect us with current students?

Both! Parkland will promote your program to our enrolled students. We encourage employers to post and promote the apprenticeship as they would any other career opportunity. We can coach you on marketing your apprenticeship.

How much does an apprenticeship program cost?

The employer determines if they'll pay wages during class time or subsidize education costs. Parkland does not charge to sponsor your program and provide technical assistance with USDOL.

How long does it take to set up an apprenticeship program?

An apprenticeship takes one week to a few months to create. Creating customized training can take longer than using existing curriculum.
