Eligibility for the Honors Program

Honors Program Application

The Honors Program includes freshman who are recent high school graduates, Parkland sophomores, and transfer students; full-time and part-time students. Honors students are from diverse backgrounds and have various interests. You should consider applying if:

• You are a recent high school graduate and had either:
  • a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher;
  • 25 or higher composite ACT score;
  • 1100 or higher SAT score; or
  • you qualify for ENG 106
• You are already a Parkland student and have:
  • a cumulative Parkland grade point average of 3.5 or higher; or
  • have a cumulative Parkland grade point average of 3.0 or higher after one semester and you have been nominated for the Honors Program by a Parkland faculty member. (A student needs to write an essay that places he/she in the program)

The Honors Scholarship

Scholarship Application

Honors Program students may receive a scholarship of up to $100 per year for two years. To receive this scholarship, you must complete at least one honors course per semester and receive an A or B, or complete an A with Honors and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Students who graduate from the Honors Program and participate in the graduation program are eligible to receive a $300 schlarship.

For transfer programs (A.A., A.S., A.F.A., A.E.S degrees), you must complete at least three honors courses with an A or B in each

For career programs (A.A.S.), you must complete two honors courses in your program (A with Honors option) and maintain a 3.5 grade point average.

Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is the International Honorary Society of the Two Year College. Parkland's chapter is Alpha Psi Eta. It's purpose is to recognize the achievements of academically excellent students. Membership in Alpha Psi Eta, a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, is by invitation to qualifying students. The organization's activities are directed to the promotion of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.
Membership requirements are as follows: To qualify, a student must:

• be currently enrolled at Parkland College
• have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher
• have completed 12 credit hours (100-299 level courses) of associate degree coursework at Parkland College
• submit a one-time application/membership fee (which pays for mailings, a pin, an elaborate induction ceremony and a reception to which all family and friends are invited, and travel to regional and national events).

Benefits of membership for students:

• opportunities to join with fellow scholars to promote academics and service on campus and in the community
• receive acknowledgement for their outstanding work at Parkland
• receive the Phi Theta Kappa seal on their diploma and the privilege of wearing the Honors Stole and Tassel at graduation
• become eligible to apply for a myriad of scholarships (over $ 34 million)
• have the chance to travel to conferences throughout the year
• have Phi Theta Kappa membership noted on their transcript, putting them ahead of other students seeking admission into senior institutions or other applicants for jobs
• automatically be nominated for the National Dean's List (a yearly publication of outstanding students that guarantees 30 scholarships to Phi Theta Kappa members annually), which is one more item to use in their college transfer application or resume.

Graduating with Honors

Honors Application

To recognize students who have demonstrated academic excellence in their pursuit of higher education, Parkland College will publicly acknowledge those graduating students who have achieved at least a 3.60 program GPA with a minimum of 30 credit hours of 100-299 level course work applicable to the program at Parkland College as "Graduating with Honors." The designation "Graduation with Honors" will be stated on the student's transcript and diploma. (See p. 106 for Honors Program graduation requirement.)

Honor's List (Dean's List)

A Parkland College honors list is published for the fall and spring semesters, listing the students whose scholastic achievement has been outstanding. Awarding of honors will be based on performance on courses 100-299 (excluding ALS courses). To receive academic honors, a student must earn a minimum 3.5 GPA for the semester in which they are being awarded. For students who earn less than 12 hours in that semester, a minimum 3.5 cumultive GPA with 12 or more cumulative hours must be achieved for the academic year (summer, fall, spring).
