The science of matter, chemistry covers a wide spectrum of the physical sciences. For example, biochemistry studies the chemical reactions of living organisms; inorganic chemistry studies the properties and reactions of inorganic compounds, while organic chemistry focuses on the chemical structures and reactions of organic compounds. Chemists typically work in research labs or in the field studying everything from medicine to nutrition to pollution to forensics. This is a fascinating career field for those with inquiring minds and scientific aptitude; those with undergraduate degrees in chemistry may work as research associates, while those with PhDs may find work as lead scientists or professors.
Parkland's health professions and engineering programs often require chemistry courses; nonscientists may choose the Chemistry of Everyday Life to gain a fuller understanding of chemistry. Several CHE courses meet the IAI transfer requirements, and all fulfill the graduation requirements for the A.A.S. and A.G.S. degrees.
