This summer, local kids have a new, environmentally friendly place to play amid the beauty of nature, thanks to some hard work from Parkland Construction Design and Management program students.
Stop by the Champaign County Master Gardeners' Idea Garden on Lincoln Avenue, just south of Florida Street in Urbana, where Professor Greg Walburg and his students have installed a children's playhouse structure in collaboration with the Master Gardeners. It even has a green roof!
The student group of the Construction Design and Management program was approached by the Master Gardeners in summer 2012 about helping them with the project, to design and build a structure to be a children’s playhouse in their Idea Garden, Walburg said. The Idea Garden is a place to showcase new gardening concepts.
"Besides functioning as a children’s play space, the structure was also to include a green roof," he said. "A green roof is designed to have a soil layer on top of the roof to grow plants."
Students met with the gardeners throughout the year to arrive at a final design for the project. This spring, students pre-built the components for the structure in the Parkland construction lab, installing them and completing the assembly on-site in late April. Students then spent a final day installing the membrane, which seals the roof for installation of the soil and plantings.
