Tornado talk at planetarium

Fri, Nov 06, 2009 starting at 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

WILL meteorologist to show footage, give tips

November isn't the peak month for tornadoes in Central Illinois, but it's not unheard of to have a fall "twister!" Join WILL Chief Meteorologist Kieser as he shows some of the most dazzling video footage of tornadoes around and discusses guidelines for tornado safety; how tornadoes form; and tornado facts and myths.

His talk, entitled "Tornadoes!", the next in the "World of Science" lecture series at the William M. Staerkel Planetarium, will be held on Friday, November 6, at 7 p.m. in the dome. Admission is $1 at the door with Friends of the Staerkel Planetarium admitted free of charge.

For nearly 20 years, Mr. Kieser has given tornado seminars to prepare the public for the worst of storms. His childhood interest in weather culminated in bachelor's (1983) and master's (1987) degrees in meteorology from Pennsylvania State University. While at Penn State, he took a few classes in broadcasting and worked as television weather anchor for WNEP-TV in Scranton. He has been employed at WILL since 1987; his in-depth forecasts are supplemented by the popular "Talk to Ed" segments on Fridays at 7:50 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. He also is part of "The Sky Guys" radio team with planetarium coordinator Dave Leake. Mr. Kieser holds the American Meteorological Society's Seal of Approval for weathercasting on both radio and television.

Following the World of Science talk, the planetarium will present "Two Small Pieces of Glass," a tribute to the telescope. For a full schedule of programming, call 217/351-2446 or see www.parkland.edu/planetarium.
