Illinois harpist to perform planetarium show

Sat, Jan 26, 2013 starting at 8:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Staerkel's "Celestial Strings" to feature UIUC's Ann McLaughlin, one show only

Local harpist Ann McLaughlin will play a live concert entitled "Celestial Strings: An Evening of Harp and Stargazing," at the William M. Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College.

The program will be offered, for one show only, on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 8:30 p.m. All seats are $4 with tickets available at the door. This event is part of the Staerkel Planetarium's and Parkland Theatre's 25th anniversary celebration.

McLaughlin is a graduate music performance student at the University of Illinois, studying with Dr. Ann Yeung. Under the planetarium dome, she will perform musical selections on the harp beneath images of space and the starfields of our winter skies. It will be a unique combination of concert, light show, and star gazing and will incorporate music of a variety of styles from Bach to Coldplay.

McLaughlin has a passion for performing. A winner of the 2011-12 University of North Texas Concerto Competition, she has also recorded as an ensemble member with the University of North Texas Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, and Harp Ensemble (the UNT Harp Beats). She has been an official street musician in her hometown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as part of a downtown arts program, during the past two summers
