World of Science Talk: Storm Chasing

Fri, Mar 07, 2014 starting at 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Hear "Confessions of a Storm Chaser" from local researcher Andrew Pritchard

A local weather researcher will discuss storm chasing during the next World of Science lecture at the William M. Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College.

Andrew Pritchard brings “Confessions of a Storm Chaser” to the dome Friday, March 7 at 7 p.m. Admission is $1, with Friends of the Staerkel Planetarium admitted free.

Tornadoes have remained a focus in the news since Gifford and surrounding towns suffered major damage in last year’s storm. Pritchard, one of the researchers who chases these storms, will discuss the motivation to do the dangerous work he does. He will also explore what goes into planning, preparing, and chasing severe storms, including video of one of his excursions.

Pritchard earned an Associate in Science degree from Parkland before moving on to Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, where he earned his BS in meteorology in 2012. He has been chasing severe storms for about 10 years in addition to providing weather video and photo images to mainstream networks.

Following Pritchard's talk, the planetarium will premiere The Planets, a visual tour of the solar system narrated by Star Trek's Kate Mulgrew. Tickets to regular planetarium programs range from $4 to $5. A full schedule may be found at the planetarium's website
