Parkland Theatre to present award-winning play Feb. 21 - March 3

What happens when a family of conservatives clashes with an eccentric family of free spirits?

Hilarity ensues, as you'll find out Feb. 21–March 3 when Parkland Theatre presents the Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy, “You Can’t Take It With You,” by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart.

A sensation in New York made into a Hollywood blockbuster, “You Can’t Take It With You” focuses on the outrageous, idiosyncratic Sycamore family, whose members both amuse and inspire with their madcap pursuit of happiness. This romantic, screwball comedy set in New York City provides a great life lesson for all of us and will have you rolling with laughter!

Joi Hoffsommer directs a cast of 19 actors featuring Kerry Bean, Mary Rose Cottingham, Jamey Coutant, Jesse Debolt, Marissa Embry, Mitchell Flanagin, Chris Guyotte, David Heckman, Robert Humphrey, Monty Joyce, Justin Klett, Hannah Kline, Lincoln Machula, Nic Morse, Chad Myler, Diane Pritchard, Kenna Mae Reiss, Nick Schneider, and David Weisiger.

Hoffsommer said what drew her to direct this play were its “themes surrounding love; love of family, love of friends, romantic love, and loving what you DO with your life are all in there. Audiences can expect to meet a wacky extended family made up of blood relatives but also of those who came, found what they were looking for, and stayed. In watching them live out their dreams on stage, the audience will hopefully grow to love them and root for them.”

But what also intrigued Hoffsommer was the play’s wonderful humor.” I love a good laugh,” she said. “An audience should certainly expect to laugh when the uptight family of the potential son-in-law comes to call.”

“You Can't Take It with You” performances are Feb. 21, 22, 23, 28 at 7:30 p.m.; March 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m.; and March 3 at 3 p.m. Ticket prices are $14 for adults, $12 for students and seniors (55+), $8 for Youth 12 and under, and only $10 each for groups of 15 or more. Parkland Theatre continues its guarantee of affordable theatre for everyone with its “pay what you can night” on Thursday, Feb. 21 and its “half-price night” on Thursday, March 1. Reservations are strongly encouraged and may be made online at www.parkland.edu/theatre or by calling 217/251-2528.
