Issue 4

September/October 2000

September is.....

During the month of September, libraries across the United States are observing "Library Card Sign-Up" month by encouraging users to obtain library cards and to enjoy the resources that libraries can offer.  One of Parkland College's best back-to-school give-away is your library (ID) card.

Parkland Library reminds all of our users that their Parkland IDs are their library cards.  Library cards (IDs) are required to check out all materials, including reserve items.  Please bring your IDs with you whenever you come to the Library.  You never know when you might need your ID to check out material.

Parkland IDs are issued by the Student Life Office, X-149.  They can be contacted by phone, 351-2206, for their hours.

Banned Books Week

September 23 - 30

This year's theme for Banned Books Week is "Fish in the River of Knowledge."  Banned Books Week has been observed since 1981 and celebrates our freedom to read.  It serves as a reminder that we shouldn't take this precious democratic freedom for granted.

"Freedom to express oneself through a chosen mode of communication becomes virtually meaningless if access to that information is not protected."  --  Intellectual Freedom Manual, AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION

Stop by the Library September 11 - 30 to visit our "Banned Books" display.  Learn more about books which have been banned or challenged.
