From the Director.....Fall into the New Semester |
The fall semester has begun with a flying start at Parkland Library. Requests for library instruction sessions are higher than ever. In these sessions students are taught how to locate and evaluate information. The instruction request form is now available on our webpage at the "Library Services" link as well as at the Information Desk. Continuous improvement of Library Instruction is one of our top priorities, and faculty and students are asked to complete five-minute evaluation forms at the end of each session. We value your feedback concerning this and any of our other services. Interpreting the myriad of information that is available through the Internet and in our subscription databases can sometimes be overwhelming. Our librarians can assist with locating, interpreting, and evaluating information; in short, they can make the research process less daunting. They are available during library hours and can also be contacted via PRO, our online reference service. This is an ideal way to ask brief questions from any location at any time, day or night. Online students will find PRO particularly useful. |
Parkland Library continues to benefit from participation in IDAL and the Illinois State Library consortia purchases, with several new electronic resources recently being made available for Illinois library users. These include: Encyclopedia of Life Sciences, HarpWeek, netLibrary, and the Oxford English Dictionary. Other recent additions to our electronic collections include subscriptions to NewsBanks Global Collection, Todays Science from Facts.com, and Literary Marketplace. For more information about these and other e-resources, check our webpage. The summer allowed the library staff some time to overhaul the printed reference collection. Books were weeded, and new ones purchased. As part of our ongoing weeding process, discarded books are offered for sale near the Circulation Desk. The selection is ever changing, so be certain to stop by and peruse the titles; you never know what you might find. Welcome back for what is promising to be a busy and energizing semester. Stop by in person or via our webpage we are always happy to see you. -- Anna Maria Watkin |
