 Spotlight On...     Megan Lotts

Megan Lotts began her employment at the Parkland Library in the fall of 1995 as a student assistant, not knowing that some day she would become the evening Public Services Assistant. Megan, of course, does have a life before Parkland, and it began in the suburbs of Chicago. While young, she moved with her parents to Brussels, Belgium, where they lived in two adjoining suites in the hotel controlled by her father. Megan attended British Primary School and quickly became attached to the school’s pet snail, Ernie. The family returned to the States and eventually settled in Mattoon, Illinois, where her father opened a restaurant.

Megan’s growing-up years, living with her mother ("an amazing woman"), included working at the local park district, apprenticing for a commercial artist, and learning to land survey. Megan says she was "desperate to get out of town and join the wonderful world of college and opportunity."

Megan began attending Parkland College in 1995 and enjoyed the opportunity of studying in the program of Fine and Applied Arts.

During this time she worked with "some of the most talented and brilliant professors." After Megan completed her core classes at Parkland, she was accepted at the University of Illinois to study painting. Megan comments, "Though my struggle as an aspiring artist was a rocky road - working and going to school - I have managed to maintain my sanity and graduated from the University of Illinois with a BFA in painting and a BA in art history."

Currently, Megan is employed as the part-time evening Public Services Assistant. Having worked at the Library for five years, she has seen and experienced much change in the Library from checking books out by hand using a card-and-pocket system to a fully automated circulation system with a barcode scanner and computer. Megan says that she is "enjoying life until graduate school." In her free time she likes to watch movies (mostly independent films), paint, participate in outdoor activities, and catch up on reading. Her life also revolves around her "significant other," Shawn, and their three dogs, Xena, Shiva, and Ivan. Megan reveals "Often you can find the five of us cruising the local parks or just playing pitch and catch in the backyard."

Editor's Note:  As this issue of Library News goes online, we must regretfully mention that Megan Lotts has accepted a position elsewhere.  Her presence will certainly be missed in the Library.  We wish her much success in her new job and offer sincere appreciation for her years of service and positive contributions to the success of the Library!
