Articles at Your Fingertips

"Let your fingers do the walking" - a well-known catch-phrase - can certainly be applied to using the Internet.  And it has become an important component to library research.  Parkland Library's reference librarians give daily instruction to the College's students, both to individuals and to classes, on how to use the electronic resources which are available to them through the Internet.  And for instructors who wonder what they may be missing if they've never sat in on one of these instruction sessions, Julia Hough, a former Parkland librarian, has devised a workshop, "Articles at Your Fingertips," which will introduce instructors to the wonderful world of Internet research.

Julia's first presentation of this workshop in November was greeted with positive feedback.  One of the workshop participants responded: "Opened up a whole new world to me!  My students have always been way ahead of me about articles online.  I am excited about having these powerful tools at my disposal."

The workshop, sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, is next scheduled to be presented by librarian Frances Drone-Silvers on February 15.  Instructors will receive details via e-mail on how to register for this workshop closer to its date.  Or you may contact Frances through e-mail.

Frances will explain how an electronic database differs from using an Internet search engine.  She will give you some pointers in selecting the database that will work best for you and will walk you through step-by-step instructions on how to use the databases.  In addition to coming away with hands-on experience in using some of the Library's databases, you'll also receive a packet of information that will be helpful when using these resources.

This workshop will also be offered on Professional Development Day, February 22.  This session will be open to all College employees, and we believe you'll come away knowing more about the Library's electronic databases.  Watch for information with the Professional Development Day agenda.
