Grove Dictionary of Art online is now available from Parkland Library!

New York Times said "the Internet mounts a masterpiece" about this amazing source of information on art and culture.  The "Dictionary" is really an encyclopedia that takes up 5 feet of shelf space and weighs 168 pounds.  It took over 6800 scholars over 14 years to prepare the print version, but the online version will be continually updated.  Some illustrations in the print form are not available online, but many additional images have been added.

The search engine is extremely powerful and helps you take advantage of the many cross-references that Grove makes available.  If you need information on anything art-related, be sure to try this resource.  From the Library homepage, click on "Books, CDs, Videos."  Look under Electronic Reference Books and Ready Reference Sources and click on "Grove Dictionary of Art Online."

The best thing about the library is that it is available not only to me, but to everyone. It does not discriminate. It makes itself available to those who want to use it. David Horowitz
Through the end of April several new trial databases are available via the Library's web page.  Please take a moment or two to check them out and help us decide which are of most benefit and practical appeal to our students, and, therefore, worth purchasing.

The following resources are currently being evaluated:

  • American Government
  • State Geography
  • World Geography
  • AccuNet/AP Multimedia Archive
  • LearnATest [practice exams for many standardized tests, including ACT and SAT as well as Firefighter, Police, and Paramedic exams, etc.]

See the trial database link for necessary procedures and passwords for each database.

You'll also find Bartleby.com on the Search the Internet page under "Ready Reference."  Included is a large selection of reputable ready reference works including a version of American Heritage Dictionary that offers audio pronunciations of selected words.  You'll need to have an audio-ready computer to take advantage of the pronunciation feature.
