Spotlight On .....

Frances Drone-Silvers

Frances Drone-Silvers is a firm believer in community colleges!  She feels that they are a great value in education.  She also likes the opportunities offered at a community college and the small class size.  Frances got her educational start at Southeastern Illinois College, in Harrisburg, where she had lots of fun on the forensics (speech) team.  While researching for speeches, she noticed that if the librarian didn't know the answer to a question, she knew where to start looking!  That set Frances on her career path ... although she also had experience in her local public library, doing things such as dusting, shelving, and watering plants!

Frances earned a B.A. in math at Eastern Illinois University, then an M.S. at the U of I Graduate School of Library and Information Science.  She left Champaign to take a position at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, but later returned when her husband decided to attend graduate school at the University of Illinois.  Frances says, "It's challenging to return to Champaign as a non-student, but this is a great place to raise a family."

She has worked in a variety of libraries -- from university to corporate to state agency.  Currently, Frances is employed one morning a week organizing the library for The High School of Saint Thomas More.

When not at work, Frances likes to walk for exercise, enjoys Jane Austen, cross-stitch (although that has recently given way to making doll clothes for her 7-year-old daughter), and reading murder mysteries (she highly recommends The Alpine Mysteries by Mary Dahiem).  Her recent interests include "living history."  She enjoyed visiting Connor Prairie last summer and looks forward to visiting Colonial Williamsburg this year!

Library work occupies her time away from Parkland as well.  She manages her church library and volunteers at her daughter's school library when time permits.

When asked what she likes most about providing reference assistance, Frances says, "... the 'aha' moment when a confused or overwhelmed student learns that he or she can find great information at the library.  It's especially fun when a student comes back to let us know how their project or paper turned out."
