Focus On .....

Student Assistants

Pop-quiz time.  Put on your thinking cap...........  What comes to mind when you think of Parkland Library?

Books, of course.  Magazines.  Newspapers.  Videos.  A place to study.  Information on computers.  And maybe you even think of a librarian.

Another important component of Parkland Library is our staff of Student Assistants.  This group of employees provides many of the daily routines that are necessary for a well-run library.

Your first contact with a Student Assistant may be at the circulation desk.  Our SAs are on duty to check out books, including Reserves, to our patrons.  They are frequently asked questions about Parkland Library, and they can direct you to the correct Library staff to help you find what you need.

Student Assistants shelve our materials - books, magazines, newspapers.  You may also encounter SAs in the stacks straightening and dusting the shelves or "shelfreading," that is, making sure the books are in call number order.

Student Assistants also work in  Audiovisual Services.  Here they may help you use the AV equipment or retrieve videos or compact discs that you want to borrow.  Student Assistants may also help patrons learn to use the microfilm reader/printers.

The experiences that our Student Assistants learn are taken with them when they leave Parkland College.  Some move on to 4-year universities, and their work-time at Parkland Library is an advantage when applying for on-campus jobs elsewhere, especially if they choose to work at their school's library.  One of our former student assistants pursued a library degree and is now a librarian at the University of Florida.  Work experiences at Parkland Library translate well on resumés for other jobs, too.

Student Assistants must be registered for classes at Parkland.  The College permits Student Assistants to work a maximum of 20 hours per week  The work hours are flexible and include evenings and Saturdays.  If you are interested in a job at Parkland Library you should fill out an application at the Circulation Desk.

Our Student Assistants provide valuable services for all of our Library patrons, and they are one of our most valuable resources!
