Ramblings

Libraries in Illinois are cornerstones of the communities they serve.
Free access to the books, ideas, resources, and information in Illinois libraries is essential
for education, employment, enjoyment, and self-government.
Libraries are a legacy to each generation, offering the heritage of the past and the promise for the future.

Database Searching

Starting this summer, we'll have some new tools for our subscription databases—Infotrac, Ebscohost, etc.  "Etc." covers quite a lot of ground—over forty databases containing literally millions of articles! For several years we've worked to purchase more online full-text, in a variety of subject areas. And so we arrive at our current challenge, which is to provide you with better tools to sort through it all and get what you need as efficiently and effectively as possible. Stay tuned for Webfeat and SFX. You may never use these tools by name, but they'll be the foundation underlying several changes coming to our web page this summer and fall.

By Popular Demand

Parkland Library will once again be serving FREE coffee and hot tea during finals week. This is our opportunity to wish all our students "good luck" on their exams.

New Database

Parkland Library now has access to an exciting digital image archive thanks to CARLI, the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois.

The Saskia Digital Image Archive contains over 30,000 digital images of paintings, sculpture and architecture, including images from many important collections: the Prado, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Uffizi, and the Louvre, as well as archaeological sites in Greece, Italy, Turkey and Egypt. The images are displayed in both high resolution and thumbnail format. The descriptive data about the images includes references to the occurrences of these images in 19 major art history texts, including Gardner's Art Through the Ages, 12th edition; Understanding Art, 7th edition; Art and Ideas, 10th edition; Discovering Art History, 4th edition. A complete list of textbooks is available at http://www.scholarsresource.com/Browse/BrowseTextBooks.aspx

Information about the Saskia collection may be found at http://www.saskia.com/

Links to the Saskia collection are on the Parkland Library web page. Off-campus users will have to authenticate with their Parkland ID numbers. If you have questions about accessing these wonderful images, call the Information Desk at 373-3839.

Pi Day

For most of the Library Staff, π (pi = 3.14) is a nearly forgotten remembrance of long-ago high school math. But it came back to haunt us on "Pi Day" (March 14 = 3.14) in a refreshingly pleasant way . . . . blueberry, strawberry, apple, cherry, key lime and even chocolate chip pies were studied in a test of gastronomic delight. We are happy to report that unlike our math grades, Pi Day scored an A+ from all the staff.
