Raeann Dossett attended the CARLI-sponsored
EBSCOhost Administrative Module Training
in Champaign on August 11.
Anna Maria Watkin assumed Chair
of the Board of Directors for CARLI on
July 1. She took part in Board
orientation day at the CARLI offices in
Champaign. She attended the NILRC
Council of Delegates meeting at Lake
Land College in Mattoon. Anna Maria
serves on the Parkland Art Gallery
board, Art Annex selection committee,
and the College Development Advisory
board. And in early summer, after 22
months, her braces were removed!

The Library has new furniture in the
Reading Lounge. This is the first phase
of a multi-year furniture replacement
project. Watch out for more new
furniture later this year in the
periodicals area.
The Literary Legends series was a
huge success. The Library hosted
intimate, small group discussions in the
Reading Lounge with authors Ernest
Gaines, Walter Mosley and Sherman Alexie. Enthusiastically
attended, these events were part of a
grant-funded program with Champaign
Public Library.
Library staff from Illinois Valley
Community College spent a morning with
us in August as part of their
professional development program. We
share the same architect and IVCC wanted
to see our renovations.
The UIUC Mortenson Center for
International Library Programs brought
librarians from Nigeria and Vietnam to
visit Parkland College Library in late
spring and early summer, respectively.
Parkland Library received two CARLI
collections grants for FY07. We will
collect materials in the subject areas
of gender/feminist anthropology and
audition preparation materials.

Over the summer, Virginia Stout,
Library Technical Services Assistant,
traveled to Scotland with
The CHORALE, a singing group in the
Champaign-Urbana community, and her
sister, a member of The CHORALE. The
CHORALE performed with Jean Redpath, the
renowned Scottish folk singer, for six
concerts at Paisley Abbey near Glasgow,
Iona Abbey, Royal Chapel in Stirling
Castle, Dunkeld Cathedral, St. Giles
Cathedral, and Canongate Kirk. To get a
taste of the local food, Virginia tried
haggis, blood sausage, cold
pancakes, and whiskey cream. She was
reluctant to return to the States after
such a wonderful trip.
Want your own visceral Scottish
experience without the travel? Check out
and breathe deep of the Library's copy
of the 1897 edition of The Complete
Poetical Works of Burns (Scottish
favorite son Robert Burns, that is).
Call number PR 4300 1897 .B5 Alas,
it is a facsimile edition, but it still
has that hearty old book smell, and many
other Burns volumes are located in that
section of the Library stacks. |
