Why I Love Parkland Library
The Parkland Library is a welcoming place, with
friendly and helpful people. It's a happening
place, with students at the computers, talking
with each other at a table, or checking out
books at the circulation desk. It's a great
place to be, right in the center of our
College.
It
is a place to access information, from books,
computers, and, of course, from those friendly,
helpful people.
It is a place for culture. It's fun to check out
the Art Gallery Annex for the work of local
talent and to enjoy the opening reception with
tea and cookies and the artist's talk.
It is a place to meet with writers. I
appreciated the chance to meet and learn from
Walter Mosley about his work, as part of the
recent Literary Legends event.
My favorite spot is the informal reading area
with its new comfy chairs, good lighting, and
shelves of fragrant new books waiting to be
checked out.
However, it's not only about my personal
pleasure. As part of my job, I also have a
working connection with the Library staff. For
years PCTV wanted to make its programs available
to those who do not get the Parkland channel.
Having them in the Library for check out was an
idea that did not seem possible until Anna Maria
Watkin and her staff made it happen. They also
support Parkland telecourses by making the
videos of telecourse lessons available to
students who are not able to view them on our
Channel.
Climb that broad staircase in the College
Center, open those glass doors, and suddenly
you are in … the heart of the College.
That's why I love the Parkland Library.
