What do
doughnut shops, airports, laundrymats, churches, bookstores, and
cafés have in common? They all have Wi-Fi.
Did you ever wish you could access
the Internet from anywhere within Parkland Library? Would you like
to use your own laptop when studying in the third floor Quiet Zone
or while sitting in the sunshine by the south windows? How about in
the book stacks or by the current magazines? Well, now you can.
During the fall semester, the
Library purchased a wireless network, the network specialists from
the College's Campus Technologies department installed it, and the
idea came to life.
Students, faculty, and staff can now
connect to the Internet from all areas of the Library. And
connecting they are. The response has been overwhelmingly positive.
People love the convenience and the opportunity to be able to
connect to our research databases on their own machines. As the word
has spread, usage has increased and people can now be found surfing away
from the comfort of a lounge chair, in the Group Study room, or in
the Reading Lounge with their friends.
You must have a student e-mail or a
faculty/staff Novell network account to use the service, and we ask
that you follow Parkland's computer usage guidelines and network
policies. While we cannot provide technical support, we do have a
handy instruction guide for you to follow when you connect. The guide is
available at the Information Desk. Other access points throughout
the College currently include locations in the B, D, M, and W wings.
We invite you to bring your
cappuccino, find a comfy spot, pull up a chair, and log on. Oh,
while you're here, we'd love to know what you think. Drop us a note
at our Suggestion/Solutions area or use the online Suggestion
Box.
