Black History Month

The annual African-American Read-in, sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), kicked off Parkland College’s 2004 Black History Month Celebration on February 2nd.  Cynthia Biggers, professor of English, was honored at this inaugural celebration for her decades-long commitment to literacy, as well as being instrumental in serving as the coordinator of the African-American Read-in at Parkland College for the past several years.  Professor Biggers, who will retire in May, 2004, after 33 years of service, was honored with a service recognition plaque presented by Dale Ewen, Executive Vice-President, Parkland College.  In addition, Congressional Representative Tim Johnson expressed remarks of appreciation, and the Black History Month Committee presented Cynthia with flowers and a framed 2004 Black History Month commemorative poster.     -- Marva Nelson, English & Critical Studies Dept.
