Google is one of the most popular search
engines for the World Wide Web.
It is quick and usually finds good results. But, if you’d
like to improve your searches, here are some tips:
Use quotation marks
You’ll get different search results if you put words in
quotes. This
technique works well when the words normally appear next to each
other.
Think like a web page
You may have to use a variety of keywords – if yours don’t
match the web page creator’s, you are out of luck. So… use keywords that you think should appear on the page.
For example, if you are looking for a definition, you
might want to search for "schizophrenia is" rather than just
schizophrenia.
Do an
advanced search
Have you ever tried the Advanced Search feature – to the right
of the Google search box? You’d be surprised at what you can do to limit the
results of your search ... limit by update ("show me sites
updated in the last 3 months"), or eliminate words that you
do not
want to show up in the results, or search title words only.
You can search specific domains: for instance, .gov or .edu.
Use "wedge words"
Wedge words limit the search to the type of information you
want. Try these: review,
faq, tutorial, encyclopedia, comparison chart, news.
Use Google’s specialized databases
Google’s Image search lets you look for visual information.
The News search limits you to certain specific news outlets.
Be sure to try
these tips the next time you use Google.
