Ramblings

"Books had instant replay long before televised sports."
~ Bern Williams

Featured Databases

Two databases were recently added under the Articles and Databases section of the Library webpage:
Ebscohost Academic Search Premier contains full-text peer-reviewed articles for nearly 4600 titles, and indexing for 3000 more. Premier covers journals in biology, chemistry, education, engineering, humanities, physics, psychology, religion & theology, sociology, etc. If you want scholarly or peer-reviewed articles, this database is a good place to start. (Click Ebscohost to find Academic Search Premier in their list.)
Journal Finder - Does Parkland have full-text access to Quarterly Review of Distance Education? Does the Library have the journal Nursing Times? Journal Finder is a "one-stop" shop that will let you know. Input the title you are seeking and Journal Finder will tell you which database has it full-text, then link you into the database. Or it will tell you that the Parkland Library owns it and link you to our online holdings list, so you can see which years we have.

A New Lease on Reading for Fun

When we buy books for the Parkland Library, our primary mission is to support the curriculum. But we also get a lot of requests for popular fiction and other leisure reading. Our dilemma: how to use library funds wisely to support these diverse needs.
Enter our new leased book program! For a reasonable annual fee, a company called Baker & Taylor provides us with a monthly allowance of about 100 books. We don't actually own them, and we send old ones back for fresh selections each month. We can have that new book you've been hearing about, and when the buzz fades, we trade it in for the next big thing.

Look for this collection in our main floor Reading Lounge under the "Best Sellers" banner. You can borrow these using your Parkland ID just like other library books. If you have an author you'd like us to look for when we make our monthly selections, let us know through our Suggestion Box.

Old Timers

Staff members of the Library's Technical Services unit recently observed milestones. In May Nancy Bode attended the College's Recognition Banquet. Beginning at Parkland in 1978, she was recognized for twenty-five years of service to the College. September marked the employment anniversaries of Virginia Stout (25 years) and Janet Wilkinson (22 years).

Paperback Exchange

We invite you to stop by the Library and browse the Paperback Exchange, a self-service, mostly fiction, book exchange available to anyone who wants to take (and/or leave) a gently read paperback.
Simple to do: Select one or two books at a time from the display near the Service Desk. These books are not part of the permanent book collection, so there is no check out, no due date, and no fines! Simply return the book when you're done, and/or exchange one of your own paperbacks for one of ours. (While we encourage you to return paperbacks from this collection, donations and returns are not required in order to take part.)

Paperback Exchange

The selection of books changes, and feedback for this exchange has been overwhelmingly positive. The next time you're planning an R & R break, visit the Paperback Exchange at your Parkland Library.

Conference Presenters

Faculty members Raeann Dossett, Information Services Librarian, and Beth Eisenhauer, Reading Instructor, will present at the ninth annual Learning Community conference in Kansas City, Missouri, in November.

Library Hosts Scholar

The Library will be host to Rirhandzu Mhinga, a participant in the Mortenson Center's associate program for international librarians. Ms. Mhinga will spend a few days at Parkland learning about our Library and role in academic services.
