Preparing for the Real Thing

The road to becoming a librarian, as with other professions, includes education and practical experience.  To accomplish this the University of Illinois’ Graduate School of Library and Information Science encourages students to engage in a one-semester practicum during their studies.  The practicum allows students to apply the knowledge they acquire in classes under the supervision of an experienced librarian.  During the practicum, students shadow practicing professionals, begin performing some independent work, and complete a project that is to the mutual benefit of the library and the student.

Jane Currie This semester, Parkland Library is happy to have Jane Currie as a practicum student.  The emphasis of her practicum is on reference librarianship, and Parkland librarian Raeann Dossett is the site supervisor.  Jane has a B.A. degree from Jacksonville University (Fla.) and a M.A. degree from Montana State University.  Both of these degrees are in history.  Jane says she "moved around a lot" while growing up, but she goes "home" to northern Minnesota where her retired parents live.  After completing her studies at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science in August, she hopes to begin employment in an academic library.
