Next in our ongoing story of what makes up Parkland Library is ... the Reserves Collection.

The Reserves Collection, located at the Circulation Desk, allows students access to items of expected high use.  This provides a central location for students to borrow material that augment classroom instruction.

Parkland instructors determine what is "on Reserve."  Items may include articles from magazines or journals, personal copies of textbooks or solution manuals, sample exams, or books and videos from the Library's collection.  Instructors should allow at least one week's notice to have an item ready for Reserve.  You will be asked to fill out a Reserve Collection Request form.

Instructors are responsible for obtaining appropriate copyright permission.  Parkland College maintains an institutional subscription to the Copyright Clearance Center, and the Library has information on this.  Guidelines for "fair use" for educational institutions make provisions for spontaneity - "The inspiration and decision to use the work and the moment of its use for maximum teaching effectiveness are so close in time that it would be unreasonable to expect a timely reply to a request for permission" to copy.  (Report of the House Committee on the Judiciary: House Report No. 94-1476)  With this in mind, it is recognized that any photocopy on Reserve will need copyright clearance for subsequent semesters.

Newly implemented by the Library this summer is ERes, an electronic reserve system, from Docutek.  This system has many applications that support our Reserves Collection including the ability to scan in documents (such as articles, class notes, sample tests), to list all Reserve items, and to permit off-campus access to scanned materials and to the searchable Reserve list.  We believe that ERes will improve and enhance our ability to provide excellent reserve services.

It is important for students to always present their IDs when requesting Reserve material ... even if they only want the item for a few minutes to make a photocopy.  Properly checking out Reserve items is an important step in keeping necessary statistical records of the use of Reserve materials.  Most Reserve items are "in library use only."  The loan period for Reserve materials is varied:  two hours, overnight, two days, and one week are typical.

For information about Parkland Library's Reserves Collection or putting your materials on Reserve, contact Louis Kehinde, 351-2551, stop by the Circulation Desk, or send an e-mail to Reserves@parkland.edu
