Parkland’s TEFL Certification program
Parkland began its TEFL certification program in response to requests from American and international students who were interested in teaching outside the U.S. It is designed to serve these two groups:
• adventurous Americans— teaching abroad offers valuable life experience in another culture and opens the doors to a wider range of long-term career decisions.
• international students—being a qualified English teacher can be a competitive advantage for fast-paced and growing job markets.
A TEFL certificate can provide tangible qualifications for getting involved in the growing field of educational language training. Teaching English outside of the U.S. or other English-speaking countries presents unique challenges. This program therefore has a different focus than an ESL program, which emphasizes teaching English to internationals who are in the U.S.
Length of study
You can complete this certificate program as a full-time student in two semesters, subject to course availability. It is also possible to enter as a part-time student and finish the program over several semesters. Students may be awarded a certificate of completion of specific components, as well. Although it may be most useful to take the courses in the recommended sequence, it is possible to join the program at any time. Second-language speakers of English may want to concurrently enroll in English proficiency courses while taking the introductory courses in the certificate program.
Entry requirements
• Proof of high school completion (if foreign, must be translated)
• Demonstrated English proficiency (recommended 550 TOEFL or equivalent for non-native speakers)
• Completion of ESL 101, ENG 101, or SPE 101 with a grade of C or higher, or equivalent course work as determined by TEFL coordinator
• Recommended TWE of 4 or better for non-native speakers
