What is the Intensive ESL College Preparation Program?
The Intensive ESL Program helps students improve their English skills for success in American colleges and universities. 
For the full-time international student, Parkland’s ESL program: 
•  Meets the requirements for and issues I-20s for full-time English preparation for advancement into college and university programs in the U.S.
•  Includes 20 hours a week practicing and improving your vocabulary/writing/speaking and pronunciation skills.
•  Focuses on student success through active learning: small groups, problem solving, computer-based learning.
•  Is taught by knowledgeable, qualified, and caring professionals. 

How do the Intensive ESL courses work?
•  Each student will be placed into one grammar/reading/writing class and one listening/speaking/pronunciation class.
•  Students will have extensive free access to computer labs and can learn academic computer skills at each level. 

ESL Courses

Placement
You can apply to Parkland without an international TOEFL score. After you arrive, you can register as a full-time ESL student or take the ESL Compass Placement test to qualify for academic course work. For more information see the placement procedures in the student guide or email Wendy Patriquin or call 217/353-2353.    

Academic Calendar
Fall semester classes begin the third week in August. Spring semester classes begin the second week in January. Summer semester classes begin the second week in June. 

The Parkland Learning Advantage
Parkland ESL classes are small, averaging only 12 to 14 students. Each class typically has students from many different countries. Our teachers will help you identify the skills you need to improve, develop a learning program, chart your progress in specific skill areas, and prepare you to interact successfully in an American college environment. Electives are also available in TOEFL preparation, pronunciation, and conversation practice.

Computer Resources
Parkland College has computer labs open to all students. The language learning lab provides grammar and structured ESL exercises, interactive CD-ROM practice, word processing, and composition practice, as well as full access to the Internet and public domain resources.
