In Canterbury, located in
the southeast corner of England, students study at Christ Church College, a
small, friendly school of about 13,500 students. American students live with
host families near the college, take courses with British and other Illinois
students, join student activities such as clubs, sports, and drama, and travel
both in England and throughout Europe.

Official Guide to Canterbury, Whitstable,
Herne Bay, and Rural Area – this
site has been developed by the Canterbury City Council and covers what’s
new, what’s going on, accommodation, travel, a visitor’s guide,
etc.:
Canterbury is one of England’s oldest and most historic cities. Still
largely surrounded by medieval walls, the city is dominated by the famous
12th-century cathedral where Archbishop Thomas Beckett was murdered. It is,
at the same time,
a lively modern city with exceptional academic and social opportunities.
Christ Church University College is located in central Canterbury, near
the ancient city wall and the cathedral. Founded in 1962, the college now
enrolls
about 13,500 students. American students attend classes along with British
students and have full access to all Christ Church University College facilities.
Two
Illinois faculty will be present throughout the term to help with arrangements.
Travel is an integral part of the program, with field trips to such sites
as Stonehenge, Hastings, Dover Castle, Bath, and Oxford, as well as several
trips to London. In addition, students may join the Art department trips
to Paris or Amsterdam and are encouraged to organize their own trips as
well.
Clubs cover activities such as drama, music, sports, broadcasting, and
travel. British and American students participate together in the active
student life
of the college.
Students stay in private homes in Canterbury with families specially chosen
by the college. Breakfast is provided in the home; lunch and dinner may
be eaten at the college or purchased at one of the many restaurants in
town.
Costs vary slightly every year. Therefore, costs for the current semester
should be obtained from the director of Study Abroad. Most types of aid
available to Parkland students may be used for a semester abroad, and,
in addition, there
are a limited number of Parkland Foundation Scholarships.
Study abroad students save several hundred dollars in Parkland Tuition
costs, as the college charges students for just one credit hour of tuition
and fees,
no matter how many courses they enroll in abroad.
The fall semester begins the second week in September and ends the third
week in December. The spring semester runs from the first week in January
to the first week in April. (For specific dates for the current semester,
consult
the Study Abroad office.)
In order for students to study abroad, they must have completed 12 credit
hours of college-level work, have a 2.75 grade point average, and have
completed of English 101 by the time of travel.
If you would like to study abroad in the fall, your application is due
April 15th. Students who would like to study abroad for the spring semester
should
have their application turned in before October 15th.
