There are excellent job prospects for certified nurse assistants in long-term
care. Because long-term patients need continuous care, both full- and part-time
work is available for all shifts in nursing homes and other residential care
facilities as well as in home health. Nurse assistants are also needed to work
as technicians in hospital settings and to perform basic health care skills
in outpatient clinics.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics national median hourly earnings of nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants were $10.31 in 2005. The average hourly wage for Parkland graduates in 2003 was $10.88.
You’ll need additional formal training, often provided by employers,
to advance to higher levels. Salary increases can come from your willingness
to update your skills and assume new responsibilities.
Parkland offers courses in occupational rehabilitation aide training and phlebotomy
skills that increase the marketability of the CNA. Students may also continue
their education by pursuing an associate’s degree in nursing.
