Job outlook
There is an overwhelming shortage of medical laboratory technicians nationwide — some estimates point to a 40 percent vacancy. A wide range of employment settings are available, including hospitals, clinical labs, pharmacies, veterinary research labs, industrial labs, and forensic laboratories. Continued opportunities are expected due to our nation’s aging population, the discovery of new diseases, and new medical technology.

Earning potential
Many employers offer sign-on bonuses and incentives to employment. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, median annual earnings nationally for medical laboratory technicians were $48,600 annually in 2005. In Illinois, annual salaries averaged $32,819 in 2004.
