On-the-job training
You’ll begin by practicing your skills in class, then in the field. You’ll receive practical, on-the-job training through supervised work with ambulance crews, rescue teams, and hospital emergency room staffs.

Length of study

Upon successfully completing the five-hour Emergency Medical Services I course, you are eligible to take the Illinois EMT-Basic Certification examination. You can complete the course in one semester.

Following EMT-Basic Certification and one year of pre-hospital experience as documented by a pre-hospital EMS agency, the EMS-Paramedic Certificate can be completed in 12months. Upon successful completion of the coursework, you are eligible to take the state examination for Emergency Medical Services: Paramedic (EMT-P).

Entry requirements
All health professions programs require a State Police background check prior to or at the start of the first course in a program. A positive finding related to a felony conviction may limit clinical placement and employment.

Students are required to have a Health Care Provider CPR card to enroll in EMT-B. Those holding the EMT-B certificate who wish to go on to EMT-Paramedic must be 18 years of age prior to taking the Illinois Licensure examination, have a high school diploma or equivalent, a current CPR for Healthcare Provider card, a current Illinois or National Registry EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate license, one year of pre-hospital experience as documented by a pre-hospital EMS agency, and a letter of support from an advanced life support agency.
