Practical tips for a "greener" business: free information session

Learn practical, effective ways to make your company "green" at a free information session on Tuesday, May 20 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Parkland College Business Development Center, 1315 N. Mattis Avenue, Champaign.

The event will include breakfast, exhibits, and a presentation by Tim Lindsey, manager of the Pollution Prevention Program for the Illinois Waste Management and Research Center (WMRC) and Laura Barnes, WMRC librarian. The presenters will discuss ways to improve your bottom line through sustainable business practices, such as reducing material and energy waste and taking advantage of available resources. A question-and-answer panel will round out the activities.

A division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the WMRC assists Illinois industries, businesses, and citizens to reduce and manage waste.

Session space is limited; registrations will be taken through May 13 by calling 217/351-2235 or by email at PBDC@parkland.edu.

Art professor to present Krannert talk on sculpture

Chris Berti, professor of Art, will speak at the Krannert Art Museum on Monday, May 12 at 6 p.m. as part of Krannert's "Taste of Art" lecture series. His presentation is entitled "Genesis of an Illinois Sculptor"; a wine and cheese reception will follow the talk.

PTK to fight cancer in Relay for Life--support needed!

Parkland’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society needs your help to fight cancer.

The group will participate in the Relay for Life of Champaign County, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The event will be held May 17 at the Centennial High School track. So far, PTK has raised nearly $900 of its $2,000 fundraising goal; it's now asks for your help to reach its goal—and every penny counts.

Join the PTK relay team or make a donation, becoming part of the Relay For Life® to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back against this disease through cancer research. Parkland Pops to perform "A Little Bit Rock 'n' Roll" concert

Enjoy "Rock Around The Clock," "Stand by Me," "Let It Be," "Great Balls of Fire," and other popular rock tunes when the Parkland Pops community choir performs its "A Little Bit Rock 'n' Roll" spring concert on Saturday, May 17 at 1 p.m. at Parkland Theatre.

Director Brian Hagy leads a 28-member group; he will be joined by accompanist Emily Hess, drummer Paul Carman, and Developmental Services Center staff members Jan Petee, Jacque Kalipeni, and Nancy Bell.

The Parkland Pops choir is open to community members, including those with special needs.

Ayurvedic physician from India to present tips for better health

What do you know about Ayurveda, and what can it do for you? Enjoy an enlightening presentation from visiting Ayurvedic physician Dr. Anasuya Devi Bharadhwaja on Friday, May 16 from 3 to 6 p.m. in Room D105. The public is invited to attend this free lecture.

Dr. Bharadhwaja and husband Dr. Srivatsa Bharadhwaja operate the Dattam Ayurdhama, a clinic specializing in authentic Ayurveda food and therapies, situated at Mangalore in south India. Dr. Anasuya Bharadhwaja will lecture and demonstrate simple Ayurvedic health tips, holistic remedies, and cooking.

Ayurvedic medicine (Ayurveda), a holistic approach towards health with origins in ancient India, is practiced in many parts of the world. It promotes healthy living and therapies for physical, mental, social, and spiritual harmony and also includes a sophisticated system of surgery. Parkland massage therapy students are required to know the basics of this traditional holistic therapy.

Dr. Bharadhwaja graduated with honors from SDM College of Ayurveda, Udupi, earning the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery. Her expertise lies in such areas as interpretation of ancient Ayurvedic texts; herbal plant identification; pulse reading; preparation of signature therapies, herbal remedies, and Ayurvedic meals; emotional counseling; and Panchakarma treatments.

Fastpitch Softball Camps open to area youth

Sign up today for the Parkland College Softball/Champaign Park District Fastpitch Summer Softball Camps in two sessions:

A Fundamentals Camp for youth ages 10 to 14 will be held on Thursday, June 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dodds Softball 4-plex near the Parkland campus. The camp will focus on general softball fundamentals including hitting, throwing, base running, pitching, and more.

An Advanced Skills Camp for youths ages 14 to 18 will be held on Thursday, June 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dodds Softball 4-plex near the Parkland campus. This camp will emphasize pitching, advanced hitting, defense, and more, and will include a discussion on recruiting.

Greenville College degree courses at Parkland: learn more May 28

Greenville College near St. Louis offers the Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Leadership in an accredited accelerated program format right here at Parkland College. A free informational session on Greenville's Opportunities in Adult Learning (GOAL) program, designed especially for busy working adults, will be held on Wednesday, May 28 at 6 p.m. at Parkland College Room D105.

Class schedules, course descriptions, quantity and type of transfer credit accepted, cost, scholarships, and financial aid will all be discussed. Summer openings available for part-time faculty

Parkland is seeking to increase the applicant pool of excellent teachers for part-time teaching opportunities during the summer 2008 semester. Applicants are needed for Certified Nurse Assistant; LPN Clinical; Massage Therapy; Mathematics; Pre-College English as a Second Language; RN Clinical; Sociology; and Speech. Assignments may be available for day, evening, or Saturday classes. Some appointments require a minimum of a master’s degree in the discipline or related field; post-secondary teaching experience is preferred. Occupational programs require expertise in the field and certification or licensure if appropriate.

The Parkland College Digital Media Student Juried Exhibition showcases the best work of students in Parkland's Graphic Design, Web Design, and 3D Animation programs. This year's exhibit will be held at the Parkland Art Gallery from Monday, May 19 through Thursday, June 21. An artists' reception, sponsored by the Parkland College Foundation, will be held on Thursday, May 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gallery lounge. (The gallery will
be closed May 26 in observance of Memorial Day.)

An award ceremony at 7 p.m. during the reception will celebrate the achievements of students in both Graphic Design and 3D Animation. College for Kids to offer summer classes at Parkland or online

Summer enrichment classes are available for third- through seventh-graders during Parkland's "College for Kids", June 16-26 and July 14-24. Orchestra, concert band to perform joint concert May 12

The Parkland Community Orchestra and Parkland Community Concert Band will present their final concert of the season on Monday, May 12 at 7 p.m. in the Parkland Theatre. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Community Orchestra, conducted by Jack Ranney, will perform Le Tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel, the Prelude to Act 1 of La Traviata by Gusieppe Verdi, and George Gershwin's Cuban Overture. The orchestra will close its portion of the program with the James Bond Medley.

The Community Concert Band, conducted by Jeffrey Marshall, welcomes back three of its four former conductors for this special reunion event. Erwin Hoffman, William Worra, and Gregory Grove will return to lead the band in works by Percy Grainger, Lerner and Lowe, and Kenneth Alford. Music by Dmitri Shostakovich and Julie Giroux are also included on the program.
