Employment opportunities
Because this program was developed in response to employer demand, local and regional employment opportunities should be readily available. Nationally, diesel and heavy equipment technicians hold more than 400,000 jobs. Employers include agricultural equipment dealers, trucking companies, public transit companies, school systems, government entities, construction dealers, utility companies, equipment leasing companies, manufacturers, railroads, and others.

Job outlook
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, opportunities are expected to be good for those who complete formal post-secondary training in diesel and heavy equipment mechanics. The bureau currently reports a shortage of diesel technicians who have completed formal training. Also, as equipment becomes increasingly specialized and complex, demand will continue to be strong for technicians who are flexible, willing to learn new technologies, and well-trained. Persons who enter this occupation can expect steady work, because changes in the economy have little effect on this business.

Earning potential
Entry level salaries for diesel and heavy equipment mechanics range from $20,000 to $26,000 per year. With three years experience, you can expect to earn $28,000 to $42,000 per year and highly skilled, experienced mechanics may earn more than $50,000.

Career advancement
Experienced technicians have many opportunities for field advancement and some open their own service centers. Those with leadership skills may go on to become service managers, shop foremen, and dealership general managers.
