Professional faculty counselors are available to help students deal with personal issues and make referrals to outside agencies when appropriate.  Career development counseling is provided to assist students in the selection of career and educational goals.

LEAP (Linking Education and People) is a drop-in self-help support group for current Parkland students who are living with mental health issues that may impact success in college.  Some of these issues might be anxiety, depresssion, grief, relationship problems, substance abuse, etc. Contact Dennis Cockrum for information, 351-2219 or dcockrum@parkland.edu.

Your rights as a client
You have the right to refuse, question or terminate counseling at any time.  All information that you share with your counselor is confidential and will not be released to anyone without your written consent, with the following exceptions: 
• Notification to relevant others when there is an immediate danger to self or others
• Notification to relevant authorities in cases of suspected child abuse, elder abuse or abuse of a vulnerable adult
• In legal cases, the records may be released subject to a valid subpoena

What to expect from personal counseling services
Individual counseling sessions are typically 50 minutes and by appointment only.  The information shared will not become a part of your educational records.  Counseling is solution focused and short term in nature.  Counselors will, if appropriate, refer individuals to public and/or private community agencies and resources for more intensive counseling or other special services.

What the counseling staff expects from students
To provide accurate and complete information.To be on time for appointments and to notify the Counseling & Advising Center if you must cancel your appointments.  If you are more than 15 minutes late for appointments, it is very likely that you will have to reschedule.
