Parkland College

Human Services

Program Code: SHST AAS

Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.)
Minimum graduation requirement — 60 semester hours

This program prepares students for entry-level work in the human services. Mental health facilities, child welfare agencies, schools, medical facilities, and substance abuse treatment centers are some of the employers of Human Services graduates. Graduates provide support and assistance to clients under the supervision of social workers, psychologists, nurses, psychiatrists, and other human service professionals. The program allows students to choose an interest area through selection of three focus electives. The emphasis of the training is on skill acquisition and practical application. The last semester includes an intensive internship with supervision from experienced professionals in the field.

Program Notes*
• Students must demonstrate minimum assessment into ENG 101 before enrolling in HST courses. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA, a C or higher in HST courses, and receive a satisfactory rating from their internship supervisor to receive credit in HST 212. Most internship sites will also require a criminal background investigation for participation in placement.
• Students planning to transfer should take BIO 101 and consult with a counselor/advisor for a math selection.
• Parkland currently has a 2+2 agreement between this program and EIU's Career and Organizational Studies Program. Consult with a counselor, advisor, or the program director for additional information.
