Registered Dental Hygienists and experienced
Dental Assistants will receive a comprehensive introduction to conscious sedation with the opportunity to practice
the administration and monitoring of nitrous oxide in the clinical session with Kim Pankau. Topics include areas of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and dental emergencies. Lectures consist of 10 units of online study and submission of answers following
each unit, which must be completed prior to the lab session.
Prerequisites: Illinois Dental Hygiene Licensure or 1,000 hours of assisting experience, and current CPR certification

Course Objectives: |
- Demonstrate knowledge of the history of conscious sedation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the appropriate patent selection.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge to the chemical composition of nitrous oxide and its effect in the human body.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the production and storage of nitrous oxide.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the various distribution systems and their efficacy.
- Demonstrate the ability to administer conscious sedation on a patient.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of conscious sedation.

- Demonstrate the knowledge of the steps necessary to help a patient recover from sedation. Demonstrate the ability to treat medical emergencies related to conscious sedation. Demonstrate knowledge of the possible abuse issues with nitrous oxide.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the health risks to the patient and personnel of conscious sedation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the appropriate record keeping procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the legal ramifications of the use or misuse of nitrous oxide.

| Local Anesthesia for the Dental Hygienist |
|
Discover the essential skills and knowledge for safe and effective administration of local anesthesia in dental hygiene practice. Discuss the integration of anatomy, physiology,
and pharmacology as they relate to the administration of local anesthesia. Clinical sessions with Liz Jinks are included to develop competency and confidence in the techniques of administering local anesthesia. The online instruction must be completed prior to the lab session.
Prerequisites: Illinois Dental Hygiene Licensure and current CPR certification.

Course Objectives:

- Identify and assemble the armamentarium necessary for the administration of local anesthesia.
- Locate hard and soft tissue landmarks associated with the various local anesthetic injections.
- Identify patients for whom local anesthetics or vasoconstrictors are contraindicated.
- Demonstrate the correct use of local anesthetic armamentarium.
- State the management of local and systemic complications that may occur with the administration of local anesthesia.

- Describe local and systemic complications associated with the administration including determination of maximum safe dosages of both local anesthetic solutions and vasoconstrictors.
- Safely and effectively administer the anterior superior alveolar, the middle superior alveolar, the posterior superior alveolar, the nasopalatine, the greater palatine, the inferior alveolar, the buccal and the mental/incisive injections.

2-3 hour course:
- OSHA Training Workshop-Individualized for each dental office. Meets the OSHA requirement for annual dental office training.
