BLOOMINGTON - Two days after contributing to one Illinois Wesleyan team’s successful season, Robert Beauchamp is ready to try for two.

A defensive back on IWU’s College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship football team, Beauchamp joined the Titans’ basketball squad this week.

“It didn’t take long to understand what Robert is about. He’s a fierce competitor,” IWU coach Ron Rose said. “He certainly doesn’t have his basketball legs or basketball timing, but his athleticism, toughness and physical play were apparent early.”

Likely to compete for playing time at point guard, the 6-foot-1 Beauchamp was a part-time starter at Parkland College last season. He averaged 7.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals.

“My legs are a little weary today (Tuesday) but it shouldn’t be too bad,” Beauchamp said. “In maybe a week or so I should be right back in it.”

Beauchamp tried to do as much preparation for basketball as possible during the football season.

“I would get off football practice at like 6:30, go home and get something to eat and come back and shoot around at night,” said the native of Cerro Gordo. “Coach Rose has been real nice. I’ve been in his office about every three days asking him questions trying to keep up. I don’t feel too far behind.”

Rose may include Beauchamp on his travel roster for the season-opening Albion Tournament. The Titans open against Tri-State on Friday in Albion, Mich.

“We’re evaluating right now where he’s at. If we feel like he can be a contributor and help us win games, we’ll take him,” said Rose. “It’s a lot to ask of a young man in a week, but at the same time it’s a possibility.”

Beauchamp believes he could contribute to the IWU basketball team at either guard or the small forward position.

“Defense is probably my strongest point (along with) getting to the basket, penetrating and dishing,” he said. “I’ll play whichever position Coach Rose feels appropriate or helps the team the most.”

The 195-pound Beauchamp had 20 tackles, four tackles for loss, four sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery for Coach Norm Eash’s football team.

“It was so much fun. To win a CCIW championship makes it that much more special,” Beauchamp said. “I’m very glad I made the decision to play football. That (playing both sports) was a big thing in me deciding to come here.”
