Volunteer Fair –September 5th, 2007 – 10:30-1:30

On behalf of Student Life and the Service-Learning Advisory Council, we would like to formally invite all members of the Parkland family to the college’s annual Volunteer Fair, scheduled for Wednesday, September 5th in the College Center.  This event is designed not only to assist students, faculty, and staff in connecting with community organizations in need of volunteers, but to also help faculty and student club advisors in forging creative partnerships with area non-profit organizations, with the hopes of laying the early groundwork for successful service-learning opportunities.

The following organizations will have representatives on campus on the 5th:

Center for Women in Transition
Champaign County Down Syndrome Network
Green Meadow Girl Scout Council
United Way
of Champaign County
Compliance Checks
Healthy Families (Mental Health Center)
TIMES Center (Mental Health Center)
Crisis Line (Mental Health Center)
Garden Hills After School Program

As you can see, thanks to the great work of the folks in Student Life, faculty and/or student club advisors interested in bringing service-learning into their organizations and classrooms can make contact with many wonderful organizations, all in one day.  For more information, please contact Brian Nudelman or John Eby at jeby@parkland.edu.

New Parkland Service-Learning Website – coming soon

http://www.parkland.edu/academics/service-learning

The new academic year brings with it the arrival of Parkland College’s new Service-Learning website.  Designed to celebrate and support the volunteer and service-learning efforts of the Parkland community, the site will not only highlight courses and programs utilizing service-learning, but will also provide important resources and tools for faculty and college leaders to help in the creation of new and exciting service opportunities for our students.  Take a look around, and help us help you, by providing any feedback or suggestions about the site.  Send you suggestions to Brian Nudelman.

Service-Learning Student Information Cards

Along with the new website, we are asking faculty and student organization advisors this semester who have their students volunteer or work with the community to have their students fill out a short information card.  The information collected will be utilized to help Parkland continue to grow campus-wide community engagement opportunities.  The cards will be available at the new Parkland service-learning website (www.parkland.edu/academics/service-learning), or please contact Brian Nudelman to request hard copies of the cards.

Announcing the Parkland College/Garden Hills Elementary School “Homework Club!”

This semester, students and faculty of Parkland College will be working with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at a new afterschool program at Garden Hills Elementary.  Continuing to build on the important partnerships that Parkland and Champaign District 4 schools have maintained over the years, the new “Homework Club” will pair members of the Parkland family with Garden Hills students selected by the school.  In addition to help with their homework, Parkland students will have the opportunity to also take part in service-learning opportunities, by leading informational presentations connected with coursework they are currently taking.  For more information about volunteering at the “Homework Club,” or with possibly linking your class or club with the program, please contact Brian Nudelman.
