Introducing the Service-Learning E-Newsletter

This is the first issue of Parkland College’s bimonthly e-newsletter. The purpose of this e-newsletter is to share information with faculty and staff that can help them implement service-learning in their classrooms, while also highlighting the great s-l courses offered at Parkland.

S-L Conference Grants Available for Faculty

Want to get out of town, learn more about what others across the country are doing in their courses, become inspired to incorporate community engagement into your own classes, and have Parkland completely pay for it?

The Parkland College Service-Learning Advisory Council is pleased to announce the immediate availability of a limited number of travel grants to fully fund the registration costs and travel expenses for Parkland employees to attend a service-learning conference in the current year.

Please contact Tod Treat (ttreat@parkland.edu) or Brian Nudelman (bnudelman@parkland.edu) for more information.

Local Organizations Looking for Partnerships with Parkland Classes

*The Rantoul Police Department is in need of volunteers to meet a variety of needs.  A few of their specific needs:

  • Data entry / General office duties
  • Animal Control
  • Law enforcement-type opportunities (fingerprinting, checking empty homes, etc.)

*Urbana Adult Education is looking for volunteer literacy tutors.  They provide basic literacy and math, as well as ESL classes to about 1,500 people each year.

*The B.T. Washington Afterschool Library Program is looking for volunteers to help provide homework and reading help to primarily Spanish-speaking children in grades kindergarten through 7.  The ability to speak Spanish is helpful, but not required.

If you would like more information on these and/or additional service-learning opportunities, please contact Brian Nudelman (bnudelman@parkland.edu) or at 351-2534

SPE 180: A Closer Look at S-L in a Advanced Speech Class

This semester, students in Nancy Sutton's Advanced Speech class (SPE 180) are working together to create an engaging program on one of a variety of communication topics.  After the program is complete, the Parkland students will present it to students at both The High School of Saint Thomas More and Champaign Central High School.  Thus, Nancy's students have the opportunity to not only enhance their communication skills while gaining practical experience in public speaking, but they will also be making a meaningful contribution to our community.  Thanks Nancy!
