The English and Critical Studies department does not accept remedial course work in composition as transfer credit or as meeting the prerequisite for any English course
A bachelor's degree from any fully accredited American college or university fulfills the ENG 101-102 degree requirement .
Students who have taken ENG 101 or its equivalent and earned a grade of C or higher may register for ENG 102.
Students who write a college-level EOS essay at the completion of ENG 098 or ENG 099 may register for ENG 101.
Complete ENG 099 with an A or B for placement into ENG 101.

• 26 or higher RDG and 26 or higher ENG for ENG 106
SAT
• 570 Verbal for ENG 101
• 630 Verbal for ENG 106
AP
4 or 5 on either Language and Composition or Literature and Composition earns credit for ENG 101 and placement into ENG 102
CLEP
50 on the English Composition without Essay exam and write an essay evaluated as College Level 1 receive credit for ENG 101 and place into ENG 102

Students who place into ENG 099 and scored 50 or more on the Writing test are encouraged to write the ENG 101 placement essay.

Students who qualify for the ENG 101 essay do not retake the COMPASS test; they write the essay to determine placement.
Students who take the ENG 101 essay and still place into ENG 099 may retake the ENG 101 essay once.
Students who do not qualify for the essay may retake the COMPASS Writing test 48 hours after the initial test.
Only the Coordinator of Writing Assessment or the Chair of the English and Critical Studies department can make exceptions to these procedures.
